About Us

BALTA is nonprofit organization that works to reduce and prevent further deforestation of the Bolivian Amazon. Bolivia's rainforest covers nearly 230,000 square miles. It is home to some of the most diverse and complex ecosystems on the planet.  Bolivia's poverty, lack of environmental education, and a growing consumer demand for meat and soy beans has made Bolivia a prime target for environmental atrocities. Currently Bolivia has one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world, losing over 2300 square miles of rainforest each year. BALTA was created in an effort to raise awareness of the crucial role rainforests have in providing the world with the most important elements that sustain life. We understand that in order to protect our rainforest, we must provide sustainable business opportunities for local and indigenous communities who depend on these forests for their livelihood. These opportunities will help communities to create long term prosperity, without exhausting their resources. To achieve our goals, BALTA offers educational tours to the Bolivian Amazon. Tour profits are used for - among other things - the purchase of land for strategic conservation, and the support of sustainable business through land leasing and microloans. A portion of the profits are donated to our Bolivian partner Communidad Inti Wara Yassi.
